Saturday, 17th November was a special day for our organization. Our Annual General Meeting went down at JCC Church, Likoni. This is an annual gathering where we reflect and pass key resolutions for the coming year. Beginning from 8 am, stakeholders streamed into the church hall and everything was set to go with 300 attendees seated by 9 am.

After prayers, Seif Reje, the secretary of our Advisory Board took to the stage to deliver a keynote. He deep dived into an overview of our organization’s work. His focus was on the key programmatic areas starting from Scholarships, High School Mentoring, University Career Guidance, Alumni Program to the Library. It was a bird-view scan of our work with prominence being of our newly established Alumni program.
Soon after, our Accounts Manager, Cynthia Oyier presented our financials for FY18 to the attendees and projections for FY19. Our budget for 2018 closed at Ksh 33M and our proposed budget for 2019 is Ksh 43M. The leap of our budget is attributed to our expansion plans where we are set to commence operations in Mvita, a new location in Mombasa Island.
When it was time for our director (Gabi) to deliver her AGM note, she emphasized the growth plans and the bigger vision of our organization. Her announcement of the expansion to Mvita enchanted the audience who welcomed the growth prospects of Hatua. Currently, 6 satellite libraries are being set up and will start running as from January. She delivered a strong message to our students on the importance of upholding Hatua Values.
In case you aren’t acquainted with Hatua values, here is a sneak peek! Everyone in the Hatua family is expected to always uphold respect, integrity, be a team player, be resourceful, and practice service to others. That’s what we look out for in our partners, students and team members.

Before the day ended, the top performing scholars for 2018 were awarded. These are students who maintained strong average grades throughout the year. We are proud of the As, A-s and B+ performance that these students delivered consistently throughout the year. Parents who consistently contributed to our Ten Shilling Campaign in 2018 also received T-shirts as a way of appreciating their effort.
The day would not be complete without the favorite Coastal Pilau dish that was served for lunch as attendees networked and shared experiences on the year’s successes. Now, Hatua is rearing to go for the 2019 lap! We hope to concur the laid down milestones as we chart our way forward towards an exponential growth.
